People always ask why I use so many flags. It's not political or patriotic. I believe in the American dream — and I believe the flag is what unites us.

Why do I paint? Because I must! I'm an artist. It's the only thing I know. I am an American abstract artist, the title I gave myself as a young man. I'm also an abstract realist — where you know the subject matter, you know that it's your city or your town.…

I just enjoy painting! It's the only place that I feel safe and free — a happy place.
