The Masonry of Change
Bricks are the building blocks of a home. Mortared together, they bolster the infrastructure of a community, ensuring strength and offering sanctuary. When the community is in peril, bricks can also be well-aimed projectiles—targeting hatred and harassment, responding in kind when reason and humanity come undone, punching holes in a bigoted status quo.
If these words sound familiar, they should. They are the same ones we have used to introduce the theme of BRICK BY BRICK in the past. Over the first two editions — in 2019, coinciding with the celebration of Stonewall at 50, and then in 2024, calling out the urgency of a critical election year — and now this third renewal, we have welcomed 110 QUEER ARTISTS to our Wall and 3D case. Their work has spoken volumes, reminded us of the power of Pride, and inspired and united audiences at a time when the world can feel fractured beyond repair.
BRICK BY BRICK 3 sustains and expands what begun right here in 2019 — and what rocked the world in 1969 and earlier. This show’s 42 artists, 17 new to our space and another 17 returning to BbB for a second or third time, are building with bricks. And they are carrying them up and down 13th Street — our Christopher Street — as our partner in these shows, WILLIAM WAY, marks 50 years of uncompromising leadership and reimagines their Spruce Street home. When you take in this show, you join us in this work.
NOW through Friday, June 19, we encourage you to enjoy and share BRICK BY BRICK 3 as often as you can, and we invite you to come back to OFF THE WALL/Dirty Franks for our PRIDE RECEPTION, on Sunday, June 14, 3-6 PM. It will be a great way to cap this fabulous run and to celebrate how far we have come together — and indeed how much farther we have to travel.
