I make OOAK dolls using materials collected over my 40-year career. I like to combine texture and structure using leather, raffia, feathers, bones, fabric, semi-precious stones, fur, wood, beads and bells, found objects, paint, etc. I begin with faces, heads, hands and feet. I use air dried clays, polymer clay, stoneware and porcelain. I select the first element that calls to me, which is taken from concept to completion. The first finished doll becomes the Spirit of the Table. I assemble them in related stages, based on needed materials. Sometimes, I sketch first, noting specific colors and materials. Each one completed leads to the next, comprising the family of the Spirit of the Table. I leave visible stitches and knots to reflect our flawed humanity. I use hand and machine stitching to make bodies, clothing, wigs, etc. I hope my dolls reinforce our powerful desire to see ourselves in anthropomorphic objects.
